Episode 4 Tonight: Geronimo
I've been watching this series, I've been very impressed. One of the things that I find the most accurate, is one of the things that is the least often mentioned.
The Native Americans, with a few exceptions, were unable to present a unified front of opposition to the American encroachment.
When they did unify, as they did under Tecumseh, or the Cherokee (who formed a formal government, with a written constitution), it brought out the crazy in the violent, and often lawless response. The only time that a President of the United States has openly defied a ruling by the Supreme Court was Andrew Jackson's repudiation of the ruling by John Marshall's court that the Cherokee were a soveriegn nation and that their claims to the land they occupied were just and valid.
We'll see what they do with Geronimo, who is a back door uncle by marriage.
