Foote's three volume history of the Civil War is the finest documentation of that era I have ever read. I am currently doing my yearly rereading of it and I am again, amazed. Both at the power of his writing, and its elegance and wit.
I am also struck by how far we have come as a nation, amazed that we managed to survive at all. I am also reminded of how little progress has been made on many fronts. The same bastards are pulling the same tricks.
I recommend finding the three hours it takes to view this.
